These are all adjectives we as educators strive to bring to our music classrooms; we also realize that we can't hope to offer our students the most meaningful and enduring music experiences without help from parents, community, and colleagues. Corinna Smith is thrilled to offer creative music workshops for schools and studios in North America, aimed to enhance string programs and bring inspiration to young students with a style that's fresh and different.
Incorporating creative music-making in the classroom can help you:
Connect with students in a way that encourages open exchange of musical perspectives,
Increase students' musical independence and valuable divergent thinking skills,
Emphasize complete musicianship with all MENC National Standards,
Recruit new students and renew excitement among current students,
Build community pride and support for your string program,
and most importantly,
Help your students realize their full potential as creative beings.
The ideal 21st century string education model includes creative styles such as folk, fiddle, jazz, classical, pop, and other forms of music rooted in our culture and relevant to our students. The best string programs integrate elements of each style, but most teachers are classically-trained and can feel limited in their ability to teach non-classical music effectively.
Fortunately, American string music educators are known for their adaptability and willingness to embrace new ideas. The best thing we can do for our students is to inspire their passion for music, expand their horizons as artists and citizens of the world, and provide them with tools to continue exploring, creating, and learning.
This is an exciting time for us all as string educators in the 21st century. The music world continues to evolve just as quickly as our students themselves; it is important for us to build on our colleagues’ strengths and start to take the thrilling steps towards a creative string education together.
